At Taiwan’s Annual Music Awards, Mandopop Superstar Jolin Tsai Wins Best Album

At Taiwan’s Golden Melody Awards, one of the most prominent entertainment events in the Chinese-speaking world, Mandopop superstar Jolin Tsai received album of the year on Saturday in Taipei. Despite having only 23 million residents, Taiwan’s pop music sector has a significant cultural impact throughout East Asia, particularly in China, because of its unrestricted inventiveness.

Tsai won for her concept album “Pleasure,” which was inspired by the seven deadly sins. She credits influences like Madonna and Kylie Minogue.

She also took home the title of “best female Mandarin singer.”She told the audience, “Making this album felt like I had been sitting in the passenger seat for a long time, and now I’ve finally taken the steering wheel myself driving forward with all the partners who, like me, understand my music.” Since the release of her debut album in 1999, Tsai, 45, has been incredibly successful across the Chinese-speaking world.
