The Women in Tech Forum, hosted by Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation (SRTI) Park on September 25 and attended by Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of SRTI Park, focused on the Artificial Intelligence (AI) industry, which is expected to grow at a rate of 37.3% per year between now and 2030. The big event, titled “Leading the Charge: Women Shaping the Future of AI,” investigated how women may strengthen their participation in this sector by displaying the perspectives and experiences of advocates for women’s empowerment, female entrepreneurs, and a slew of business figures, including those involved in AI.
The World Economic Forum predicts that AI will provide over 97 million new employment, potentially mitigating labour displacement fears. According to PwC, the increase of employment requiring AI specialist skills has surpassed that of all jobs, and these jobs have an average wage premium of up to 25%.
According to a 2020 World Economic Forum report, women account for only 26% of data and AI positions in the worldwide workforce, while the Stanford Institute for Human-Centred AI’s 2021 AI Index Report reveals that women account for only 16% of tenure-track academics concentrating on AI internationally.
In her inaugural remarks, Sheikha Bodour stated: “In this period of rapid technological development, we must establish a future in which women are at the forefront of AI and technology. It isn’t just about equality; it’s about survival. By promoting women’s access to technology and AI careers, we can help shape the ethical foundations of these technologies, ensuring they benefit everyone. We must provide chances that enable women to lead, develop, and shape a future that benefits all of us.”
