Comics are Studied by the Emirates Literature Foundation

A narrative powerhouse, comics and graphic novels captivate readers by fusing word and image in a manner that no other media can match. But even while they have the power to enthrall and provoke thought, they are nevertheless far too frequently written down as “not real literature.” It’s the ideal opportunity to honor the power of visual storytelling, especially with Middle East Film & Comic Con coming up in April.

Ahlam Bolooki, CEO of the Emirates Literature Foundation, says, “Superheroes aren’t the only characters in comics and graphic novels. Because they are a dynamic narrative medium that is just as rich, compelling, and easily adaptable as prose, they are an extremely effective instrument for social criticism.

Mohamed demonstrates a seamless grasp of the medium through expressive imagery, tongue-in-cheek humor, and fluent narrative.

The Egyptian comic book author received several accolades and positive reviews, including the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation, the Grand Prix of the Cairo Comix Festival, the Eisner Award, the Hugo Award, and other End of Year “Best of” lists. She also won the Best Graphic Novel.
