A gang that used social media to advertise fake Umrah and Hajj permits for people who wanted to visit the Holy Mosque in Saudi Arabia in exchange for alluring and low rates with payment options via money transfers to the gang’s bank accounts was apprehended by Dubai Police.
According to Dubai Police, the group apprehended by the General Department of Criminal Investigation’s Anti-Fraud Centre tricked people into believing they could simply and swiftly obtain visas for the Hajj and Umrah. Victims’ numbers were blocked and the money they had deposited to the gang’s bank accounts was confiscated.
To prevent becoming a victim of such crimes, Dubai Police emphasized the need of acquiring visas from authorized and licensed organizations in the nation and urged caution when interacting with any social media adverts that provide any service at exorbitant fees. They also emphasized their ongoing efforts to stop fraud and manipulation of all kinds that target different facets of society.
Community members were urged by Dubai Police to report cyber fraud offenses by going to the closest police station or by using the “Ecrime” platform, which is dedicated to receiving such reports, found at www.ecrime.ae.
