Egyptian President Sisi Begs Parliament to Back Saudi Arabia

Egypt’s parliament will convene in an extraordinary session on Sunday after President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi asked legislators to allow support for Saudi defences against Houthi strikes if the country requested it. Saudi Arabia Egyptian leads a military coalition that supports Yemen’s internationally recognised government in its civil conflict with Iran-backed Houthis.

Egypt joined the Saudi-led intervention in 2015, but its primary focus has been on safeguarding Red Sea commerce routes rather than frontline military operations. Since the war in Yemen resumed in July, the Houthis have increased their attacks on Saudi targets, including oil infrastructure and Riyadh’s international airport, where 13 people were killed in an attack last week.

The Houthis have also announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia and seized territory near the Bab Al Mandab Strait, a vital Red Sea chokepoint that has grown in importance for Riyadh’s oil exports since Iran attempted to block trade through the Gulf’s Strait of Hormuz.

Egypt, of course, will take any measures necessary to safeguard or defend you, as directed by His Majesty King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman,” he stated. Sisi said Cairo stood “with full force and support to protect and defend the lands of our brothers in the Gulf” before asking participants to stand and salute Gulf states.
