The Fashion Capital of Italy has the Most Strict Public Smoking Restriction

Milan, the financial and fashion hub of Italy, has outlawed smoking in public places and outdoors. It is the most severe extension of a set of prohibitions that began in 2021 with the goal of “improving the quality of the city’s air. According to Euronews, Milan, the second-largest city in Italy, has prohibited smoking in public places and outdoors. The citywide ban, which is the most stringent smoking ban to date in the Italian fashion capital, will take effect on January 1, 2025.

In 2021, smoking was prohibited in playgrounds, parks, bus stops, and sports facilities. According to the text, “all public spaces, including streets,” excluding “isolated places where it is possible to maintain a distance of at least 10 metres from other people,  and are subject to the most recent smoking ban, which goes into force on January 1. Fines for violators of the new regulations could range from €40 to €240 ($41 to $249).

Although the measure, according to local officials, applies to “all public spaces, including streets, it does include an exception for remote locations. Smokers in remote areas are permitted to smoke outdoors, but they must keep a minimum of 10 meters between themselves and others.
