The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague dismissed the Sudanese Armed Forces’ (SAF) petition against the United Arab Emirates on Monday, citing a clear lack of jurisdiction. The United Arab Emirates has applauded this judgement. The Court’s decision has officially ended the proceedings by removing the matter from its list.
This result confirms what has long been evident: the SAF’s argument is baseless and without merit. The UAE has continuously denied SAF’s lies, which are an apparent attempt to deflect criticism of their behaviour and the ongoing crimes in Sudan.
“The ruling is a clear and decisive affirmation of the fact that this case was completely baseless,” stated Reem Ketait, UAE Co-Agent and Deputy Assistant Minister of Political Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement. SAF’s effort to use the Court as a tool for its disinformation campaign and to divert attention from its own accountability was categorically rejected by today’s ruling.
The UAE urges the SAF and RSF to cease the conflict unconditionally, commit to talks, and permit unimpeded humanitarian access as Sudan’s catastrophic civil war approaches its third year. The international community must take decisive action to hold atrocity perpetrators responsible and support a civilian-led democratic process free from military rule.
