In the presence of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) today announced the start of the world’s first large-scale ’round the clock’ gigascale project in Abu Dhabi, combining solar power and battery storage.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, and His Excellency Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, Minister of Investment and ADQ’s Managing Director and Group CEO, jointly announced the launch.
The launch is a watershed event in the clean energy transformation, allowing renewable energy to be delivered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, reinforcing the UAE’s position as a global leader in renewable energy deployment.
It will be the world’s largest combined solar and battery energy storage system (BESS), producing up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of baseload power per day from renewable energy. The project, located in Abu Dhabi, will include a 5.2GW (DC) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant and a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) BESS, establishing a global standard for sustainable energy innovation.
His Excellency Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, stated, “For decades, the most significant barrier to renewable energy has been intermittency the ability to source uninterrupted clean power day and night.” This has been the moonshot challenge of our time, and today, with the steadfast support of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
