The US Imports Eggs From Turkey and Korea to Help Lower Costs

Donald Trump’s agriculture secretary acknowledged on Friday that the United States is buying eggs from South Korea and Turkey in order to alleviate a supply shortage caused by avian flu that has driven up prices nationwide.

In Washington, Brooke Rollins informed reporters that the White House was discussing temporarily importing their eggs with other nations, and that imports from South Korea and Turkey had already started. For the near future, we’re talking about hundreds of millions of eggs,” she continued.

Due to many bird flu outbreaks in the US, which forced farmers to slaughter at least 30 million birds and severely limited supplies, the price of eggs has risen. To capitalize on voters’ annoyance with the rising cost of necessities under his predecessor, Joe Biden’s presidency, Trump used egg pricing as a rallying cry during the previous year’s presidential campaign.

After Trump returned to office in January, Rollins was given the mission of increasing egg supply and lowering prices. Producers in several nations have since expressed interest in their produce from the United States; the Polish and Lithuanian poultry associations told AFP that US diplomatic personnel were contacting them in search of fresh eggs.
