According to a senior Dubai official on Thursday, the biggest digital hazards that people are expected to face in the future are cyberterrorism, biometric data and data poisoning, and crimes in the metaverse.
“We see a huge projection of crime in the metaverse and digital space as our economies are transforming into digital economies in the coming years,” stated Major Tarek Belhoul, head of Dubai Police’s virtual assets crime branch. Data poisoning is a serious problem.
A lot of people discuss about ChatGPT, which stands on existing data available on the internet. We are all aware that information found online is not always reliable. Therefore, the key question is how AI will be able to distinguish between good and bad data. Simply destroy the data as much as possible if criminals and state actors wish to operate there. We see that is used a lot in today’s propaganda warfare from a tool aspect.
He elaborated on the use of technology to commit crimes, stating that ransomware and malware have been used repeatedly to commit crimes and extort money, that biometric data (facial, voice, iris, and fingerprints) is being used to impersonate victims and obtain unauthorised access, and that criminals are taking advantage of vulnerabilities in IoT devices. He added that cyberterrorism is expected to be the largest obstacle as technology’s role changes.
