For four months, senior police detective Frans Mathipa had been battling for access to a vital piece of South African information related to the case he was investigating. He was informed that it will finally come his way. However, he was afraid that pursuing it may end up killing him.
His car was discovered overturned two days later; he had been shot and killed while operating a vehicle.In one of the strongest democracies in Africa, the case has raised concerns that the nation’s military is greatly beyond its authority. Lt Col Mathipa, a highly esteemed officer, was allegedly murdered in August 2023 by seven members of South Africa’s special forces and one military police officer. They refute the accusations.
Three of the men accused of his murder have refused to comply with a court order revoking their release, so there is no set date for their trial and worries that it will never take place. One of them has been promoted, and they are still employed by the army’s special forces.
