Within days of its debut, a satirical online movement known as the “Cockroach Janta Party” amassed millions of followers on India’s social media platforms, appealing to young people’s rising dissatisfaction with political discourse and unemployment.
The 30-year-old American public relations graduate Abhijeet Dipke founded the parody platform, which bills itself as “a political front of the youth, by the youth, for the youth” on its website. Its website asks visitors to “join” the fictitious political party via an online form, and its Instagram account has dozens of humorous pictures, memes, and brief films.
The contentious comments made by Chief Justice Surya Kant of the Indian Supreme Court at a court hearing last week sparked the campaign. He said that certain young people without jobs were acting “like cockroaches,” referring to specific people who were supposedly abusing activism and media platforms. Online, the statement immediately drew criticism, especially from younger Indians who were already dealing with high unemployment, growing living expenses, and social unrest.
