Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York ahead of President Masoud Pezeshkian’s scheduled arrival on Tuesday for the annual assembly of world leaders at the United Nations, Iranian state television said. Pezeshkian will be the highest ranking Iranian official to visit the United States since the Middle East war broke out in February with US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
Iranian state television said Pezeshkian left for New York early Tuesday to attend the event and “convey the stances of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Araghchi, who arrived Monday, discussed the UN General Assembly in a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Iranian state media reported. Araghchi was quoted as telling Iranian journalists: “Our most essential goal is to use a huge international arena to defend the legitimacy, rights and interests of the Iranian people. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said Aragchi “will hold talks and consultations with many officials and foreign ministers attending the session. State media had earlier claimed that the Iranian delegation will be led by Pezeshkian.
Baqaei, in a post on X after arriving, portrayed Aragchi as “the head of a diplomatic delegation”. The U.S. has allowed an Iranian team to travel to the UN gathering but has put limitations in place as it did last year. For example, the State Department announced Thursday Iran’s delegation will not be able to purchase luxury products or other items while in New York City.
