The Race For a Majority in the US House is Narrowly in Favor of Trump’s Republicans

While Democrats managed to flip two New York state seats, Donald Trump’s Republicans maintained a slim lead on Friday as election authorities counted the final votes that will decide control of the US House of Representatives. With 24 contests yet to be called, Edison Research projects that Republicans have won at least 211 seats, seven less of the majority in the 435-member chamber. Republicans are expected to control at least 53 Senate seats. Trump would have a lot more freedom to implement programs like energy deregulation, border security measures, and massive tax cuts if Republicans controlled the entire Congress. Democrats would have a stronghold to resist Trump if they were able to secure a majority, which would require them to win 18 of the 24 as-yet-uncalled seats.

Parts of California and New York, where challengers overnight were successful in switching two Republican seats, are crucial to Democrats’ prospects of winning the House. Josh Riley defeated Republican US Representative Marc Molinaro in the state’s Catskills region, and Laura Gillen defeated Republican US Representative Anthony D’Esposito to represent a portion of the Long Island suburbs of New York City.

In a liberal-leaning district in the Omaha area, centrist Republican US Representative Don Bacon defeated Democrat Tony Vargas in Nebraska. While they lack the 60 votes required to swiftly approve most legislation, Republicans’ Senate majority will enable them to validate Trump’s selections of judges, cabinet members, and key staff.
