President His Highness In a cable, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan congratulated President Joseph Aoun on winning the presidency and taking the constitutional oath of office as the head of the Republic of Lebanon.
His Royal Highness Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is the vice president, prime minister, and His Highness The Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court, Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, also congratulated President Joseph Aoun. To pull the war-torn nation out of its financial catastrophe, Lebanese lawmakers choose army chief Joseph Aoun to be president earlier in the day, filling a more than two-year void.
Arriving in parliament to take the oath of office amid widespread cheers, Aoun, who turns 61 on Friday, wore a dark suit and blue tie rather than his typical military uniform.
He informed the parliament, “A new chapter in Lebanon’s history begins today.” Managing a ceasefire in south Lebanon and selecting a prime minister who can carry out the reforms that international creditors want in exchange for an urgently needed financial rescue are two of Aoun’s most difficult challenges.
