Unicef said that fighting has imprisoned at least 825,000 Sudanese children in the area surrounding the besieged state capital of North Darfur, putting them in danger of starvation or violence. Sheldon Yett, the UN children’s agency official for Sudan, called for an end to the fighting, saying, “We cannot ignore this hell on earth.” The town of El-Fasher in North Darfur is under siege, and the Sudanese army has been engaged in combat with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for about two years.
Yett stated that over 70 children had been killed or injured this year, and that an estimated 825,000 children are ensnared in an expanding disaster in and around El-Fasher. Since these figures only include confirmed cases, the actual number is probably far higher, with kids fighting for their lives every day,” he stated.
Over 60,000 individuals have been displaced in North Darfur in the last six weeks, bringing the total number of displaced persons since the war began in April 2023 to over 600,000, including 300,000 children. Twelve million people have been displaced and tens of thousands of people have died in the conflict between Mohamed Hamdan Daglo’s RSF and General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan’s troops.
