
Thailand’s Constitutional Court suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on the request of 36 Senators that her disputed phone call with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen be examined, and that she be suspended until the inquiry. Suriya Jungrungreangkit, Deputy Prime Minister, serves as the acting Prime Minister. Paetongtarn will stay prime minister and minister of culture.
The Royal Gazette published the new government lineup on Tuesday. Cabinet members’ portfolios have changed. Phumthum Wejayachai, the defence minister, has been chosen as the next deputy prime minister and minister of the interior.
Pichai Chunhavajira, the finance minister and deputy prime minister, keeps his job. King Vajiralongkorn, the constitutional head of state, has authorised the new lineup. The monarch avoids political controversies and unrest. The army has been the staunchest supporter of the monarchy.
During her talk, Paetongtarn made disparaging statements about the Thai commander in charge of the Second Army’s border battles with Cambodia. There were concerns that the army might take offence and meddle in the political system.
