In the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, Maoist rebels detonated a bomb that killed at least eight police officers and a driver, according to police on Monday. According to a police statement, a bomb struck the police car carrying the victims on Monday in the state’s Bijapur district.
This is the most recent in a string of intermittent assaults on the state’s security personnel. It comes after several insurgents were slain in recent months in a series of frequent gunfights between the rebels and the forces.
Although the territories in which Maoist insurgents operate have diminished over time, Chhattisgarh and its neighboring states in central and eastern India have been impacted by a decades-long insurgency.
There have been sporadic battles and losses on both sides as a result of the rebels’ guerrilla-style onslaught against the government, which is based on a version of communism promoted by the late Chinese leader Mao Zedong.
According to Maoists, they are striving to grant landless laborers and impoverished Indian farmers more authority over their land and a stronger claim to the minerals that large mining corporations are currently exploiting.
