A Syrian Leader celebrates “New History” by Signing a Constitutional Declaration

The Syrian leader, Ahmed Al Sharaa, celebrated Thursday’s signing of a constitutional declaration that outlines freedom of expression and women’s rights and governs the country’s five-year transitional period, marking the beginning of a “new history” for his nation.
Three months after Bashar Al Assad’s oppressive regime was overthrown by opposition fighters, the declaration follows appeals for a new, inclusive, and rights-abiding Syria both domestically and internationally. Parliament was disbanded, and the new government abrogated the Assad-era constitution
Interim President Sharaa signed the constitutional declaration at the presidential palace on Thursday, expressing his hope that it would usher in “a new history for Syria, where we replace oppression with justice… and suffering with mercy.”
According to the proclamation, a “transitional justice commission” would be established to “determine the means for accountability, establish the facts, and provide justice to victims and survivors” of the wrongdoings of the previous government throughout the five-year transitional period.
Abdul Hamid Al Awak, a committee member that created the declaration, stated that it enshrines “women’s right to participate in work and education, and have all their social, political, and economic rights guaranteed.
