President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday that although Russia is in favor of US suggestions for a ceasefire in Ukraine, any truce must address the underlying causes of the conflict and many important aspects must be worked out.
Early in 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, resulting in the most severe conflict between Moscow and the West in decades, the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives and injuries, the displacement of millions, and the destruction of entire towns.
Although it is conditional, Putin’s backing of the US ceasefire proposal presents the strongest opportunity to date to end the largest European conflict since World War Two, as Ukraine had already accepted the proposal during negotiations earlier this week.
Both Moscow and Washington now portray the conflict as a deadly proxy war that could have turned into World War Three. Putin congratulated US President Donald Trump, who has stated that he wants to be regarded as a peacemaker, for his efforts to put an end to the conflict.
The leaders of China, India, Brazil, and South Africa were also honored for their “noble mission to end the fighting,” a statement that suggested those nations would be involved in a ceasefire agreement.
Russia has declared that it will not take in peacekeepers from any NATO country to oversee a potential ceasefire. According to Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, the president will meet later Thursday with Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy.
