At least seven people were killed and over 40 injured Friday in the southern region of Iraq when a bus carrying Shiite pilgrims collided with a car. The road from Diwaniyah province to the holy shrine city of Najaf was the accident scene at 3:30 am (0130 GMT). The shrine of Imam Ali, the fourth caliph of Islam and a relative of the Prophet Mohammed, is in Najaf.
According to Amer al-Kinani, the media officer for the Diwaniyah health department, 42 people were wounded, including two in critical condition, and seven people, four men, two women, and a girl, were killed.
When the “horrific accident” occurred, the bus was carrying Iraqi pilgrims, including women and children, according to a rescuer in Diwaniyah. The passengers were pilgrims from the southern province of Basra, according to a Diwaniyah police source who verified the toll.
Since they were not permitted to speak to the media, the sources asked to remain anonymous. Throughout the year, Najaf and its twin holy city of Karbala receive millions of Shiite pilgrims from Iraq and other countries.
