Indian Carriers warn of Industry Shutdown as fuel Prices Increase, Asking Urgent Relief from the Government

The Indian airline industry is under great stress and on the verge of collapse, according to an airline association representing the country’s three largest carriers, as it seeks relief on aviation turbine fuel costs.

The Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), which represents the country’s three main airlines, Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet, sent an urgent SOS to the government, requesting immediate help. The high cost of ATF “will result in insurmountable losses for airlines and lead to grounding of aircraft resulting in cancellation of flights,” it stated.

The FIA stated that numerous routes had become financially unviable, forcing airlines to reconsider their operations. “The airline industry in India is under extreme stress and is on the verge of closing down or of stopping its operations,” it stated.

In order to survive, sustain, and continue operations, we urgently request your intervention for quick and meaningful financial assistance to get us through the current predicament,” the top airline organization informed the government.

During the ongoing state assembly elections in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry, the government limited the increase in the base price of ATF for domestic flights to 25%. However, for foreign flights, it has been increased by more than 100%, thus destroying the sector.
