Three Hikers are Killed by an Indonesian Volcanic Eruption

There were no towns or villages close enough to be in imminent danger when the eruption on Halmahera Island launched an ash cloud roughly ten kilometers into the sky. At a volcano monitoring station in Mamuya village, North Halmahera police commander Erlichson Pasaribu told reporters that twenty hikers were on the slopes when the accident occurred. Nine, he added, were from Singapore, while the others were from Indonesia.

Iwan Ramdani, the chief of the local rescue organization, reported that as of Friday night, 17 climbers, including seven foreigners, had been discovered alive. According to him, rescue operations have been put on hold and will start up again on Saturday.

When he came with a tour group on Thursday, tour guide Alex Djangu, who was on the slopes at the time of the explosion, said that the volcano was behaving “a bit strangely.”He added over the phone from his hotel near the volcano, “This was the first time I’d seen it so quiet.” “I informed the visitors that the volcano is building pressure at the bottom of the crater, which will generate a significant explosion. And my forecast came to pass.”

The 48-year-old recalled that there were two groups of tourists at the crater rim at the time of the eruption, totaling roughly fifteen.I panicked, I thought they had all died, but it turned out that in the end only three died,” the tour guide added.
