Nepalis observed the Hindu last day of sorrow on Monday for the hundreds who died in the flood along the country’s border with China, while the government continued to seek survivors following four miraculous rescues in recent days.
The Hindu majority nation of 30 million people and its missions overseas will fly the national flag at half-mast on the 13th day of death, according to a statement from the home ministry. The devout mark the final day of sorrow with rituals and food offerings.
On August 26, a massive wall of mud and rock tumbled into a river on Nepal’s Himalayan border with China’s Tibet, destroying towns and villages and burying roads and highways under mountains of muck and debris.
The mudslide has killed at least 1,380 people and left more than 5,500 missing. In recent days, search crews in Nepal recovered four individuals, including a Chinese national who was removed from a tunnel on Saturday. The others included two hydroelectric workers rescued from another tunnel on Friday and a Nepalese woman saved from her buried house on Saturday.
