Putin and Trump Decide to Pursue a Short Truce in Ukraine

According to the White House, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump agreed in a phone conversation Tuesday to pursue a limited ceasefire targeting targets related to infrastructure and energy in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

According to the White House, it is the first phase of a “movement to peace” that it hopes would eventually lead to a complete and permanent halt to the hostilities as well as a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea. Negotiations would “begin immediately” on those steps, according to the White House. Ukraine’s support for the phased ceasefire arrangement was not immediately apparent.

According to the report, Putin issued the Russian military the appropriate orders and responded favorably to Trump’s suggestion that Russia and Ukraine suspend strikes on energy infrastructure for 30 days.

The Kremlin further stated that the Russian leader assured Trump that Russia was prepared to ensure that Ukrainian soldiers who were stranded in the Kursk region of Russia would be saved and handled according to international law in the event that they turned themselves in. It claimed Putin also responded constructively to Trump’s proposal to secure safe shipping in the Black Sea, and the two presidents agreed to start talks to explore details of the deal.
