Russia’s President Vladimir Putin will be in Beijing Tuesday for a summit with China’s leader, Xi Jinping, to expand a strategic cooperation that spans from Scandinavia to Southeast Asia. The economic might of China and the huge oil output of Russia underpinning the ties between the two nuclear powers are expected to centre on this week’s discussions.
Putin visits China often and has visited Xi dozens of times, and the two leaders often call each other to exchange messages, condolences and congrats, including birthday wishes. It is his 25th visit to China, Beijing’s foreign ministry said Monday. The Russian leader last visited China in September, as guest of honour of Xi at a big military parade.
Putin said this week he was “confident” he and Xi will “do everything possible to deepen the Russia-China partnership. Beijing describes its ties with Moscow as “ironclad” and after laying out the red carpet for Trump, Xi will be eager to prove that relations between China and Russia are as robust as ever, experts said. Natasha Kuhrt, of King’s College London, said it was a “reminder to Washington that this is a solid relationship going back 30-plus years.
