Ahmed Al Sharaa, the acting president of Syria, and King Abdullah of Jordan agreed Wednesday to cooperate in securing their shared border against drug and weapon trafficking, officials said. It an event with Sharaa in Amman, the Jordanian monarch also denounced Israel’s late-Tuesday bombings on southern Damascus and southern Syria near the Jordanian border, which are the most recent in a string of Israeli strikes on Syrian military sites.
The palace stated that the leaders concurred that cooperation was essential for border security and for preventing the smuggling of weapons and drugs, which Jordan found difficult to control along its border under the regime of former President Bashar Al Assad. Jordan has attributed the widespread smuggling of weapons and drugs to pro-Iranian militias who were active in southern Syria under Assad. Sharaa promised to eradicate it.
After spearheading the rebel offensive that overthrew Iran-backed Assad, the new interim leader is making his third international trip since taking office. Assad has tense relations with his neighbours and the majority of the Arab world during the nearly 14-year Syrian conflict.
