On Tuesday, President-elect Donald Trump stated that he would not rule out using military force to take over Greenland and the Panama Canal, claiming that US control of both is essential to American national security. In an interview with reporters less than two weeks before he assumes office on January 20, Trump left open the possibility of using the U.S. military to secure both islands while a group of advisers and officials, including Donald Trump Jr., is in Greenland.
Trump’s plan is a break with decades of US policy that have prioritised territorial expansion more than self-determination.
When asked whether he would rule out the military deployment, Trump responded, “I’m not going to commit to that.” You may need to take action. Our nation depends on the Panama Canal. “We need Greenland for national security purposes,” he continued.
Denmark, a longtime US ally and a founding member of NATO, owns the autonomous territory of Greenland, which is home to a sizable US military installation. The Associated Press claims that Trump questioned the validity of Denmark’s claim to Greenland. For over 25 years, the nation with the same name has had exclusive control over the Panama Canal. In 1979, the US withdrew its cooperative agreement to control the vital waterway and gave the Panama Canal Zone back to the nation.
