UAE: Rajab Crescent seen in Abu Dhabi Skies two Months Before Ramadan

According to the UAE Astronomy Centre, the first day of the Hijri month of Rajab will be Wednesday, January 1. This effectively indicates that the month of Ramadan, when people fast, is only two months away. At 11 a.m. UAE time on Tuesday, the crescent was observed at the Al Khatim Astronomical Observatory despite hazy and foggy sky.

According to the Islamic calendar, Rajab comes before Shaaban, and Ramadan follows Shaaban, when Muslims worldwide observe a day of fasting from sunrise to sunset. The precise start date of Ramadan might change depending on when the new moon is seen because the Islamic calendar is lunar.

In Muslim nations, sightings of the crescent moon will occur on the 29th day of Shaaban. Depending on whether the moon is visible, each nation will determine the start date of Ramadan.

However, according to the majority of astrological calculations, it will start on March 1 in the United Arab Emirates. In many Islamic nations, it is an important custom to spot the crescent to signal the start of Ramadan. People frequently congregate in mosques or open spaces to observe the sky in nations like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Indonesia, and Pakistan, and the news of the crescent sighting is widely welcomed.
