With Ice Plunges, Embraces, and Light Displays, the World Welcomes 2025

Communities all throughout the world celebrated 2025 with breathtaking light displays, embraces, and ice plunges, from Rio de Janeiro to Paris to Sydney. BThousands of people braved the pouring rain to celebrate the beginning of 2025 in New York City as the New Year’s Eve ball took place in a muddy Times Square.

With midnight in New Zealand falling eighteen hours before the ball dropped in Times Square, South Pacific nations were the first to ring in the new year. The first big city to celebrate was Auckland, when thousands of people gathered downtown or climbed the city’s ring of volcanic peaks to watch the fireworks.

In regions including the Middle East, Sudan, and Ukraine, conflict has stifled recognition of the beginning of 2025. Twenty-four hours after New Zealand, American Samoa will be among the last to welcome 2025.

Fireworks erupted across the bay and off Australia’s Sydney Harbor Bridge a few hours after Auckland. The celebration drew over a million people to Sydney’s famous harbour. The audience joined in on a sing-along led by British music sensation Robbie Williams.
