According to national news agency Bernama, a fire in a seaside town in Malaysia’s Sabah state on Sunday burned almost 200 homes, forcing hundreds of people to flee. According to Jimmy Lagung, the district’s fire and rescue chief, authorities were informed of the incident in Sandakan district at approximately 1.32 a.m. (1732 GMT), as reported by Bernama.
The fire spread quickly due to strong winds and the houses’ close proximity, and it was challenging to find an open water supply during low tide, Lagung said, according to Bernama.
The fire started in one of Sabah’s water villages, which are home to some of the poorest people in the nation, including numerous indigenous and stateless groups, and have wooden buildings raised on stilts. According to Bernama, who cited unofficial numbers of people registered at a temporary relief center in Sandakan, about 445 people have been displaced thus far.
Anwar Ibrahim, the prime minister of Malaysia, stated that the federal government was working with Sabah authorities to give those impacted basic aid and temporary relocation. In a Facebook post, he stated, “The safety of the victims and immediate assistance on the ground are the priority now.
