A Fire in a Chinese Market killed eight People an Hour Ago

According to local authorities, a fire at a vegetable market in north China on Saturday claimed eight lives and injured fifteen more.

“The injured have been sent to hospital for treatment and are currently not in life-threatening danger,” the Qiaoxi District People’s Government declared following the fire in Zhangjiakou, northwest of Beijing.

According to the district authorities, the fire at the Liguang market started at about 8:40 am (00:40 GMT) and was put out after 10:00 am. Investigations were underway to determine the cause of the fire People were seen escaping the market as dense smoke billowed upwards in footage that was posted online and geolocated by AFP.

In other videos, firemen were seen fighting the fire and removing people from the area. Due to loose building regulations and a frequently careless attitude toward job safety, fatal fires are somewhat prevalent in China. According to state media, a fire in the major city of Chengdu in October sent 24 people to the hospital with respiratory problems. 16 people were murdered in a fire at a retail center in Zigong, a city in the southwest, in July.
