Korean medical knowledge and technology, termed K-HEALTH to distinguish it from the global K-POP phenomena, were already on the rise in the Gulf prior to the Novel Coronavirus pandemic, and a highly specialist centre featuring these was just inaugurated in the capital.
This is the Korean Pavilion at Burjeel Hospital, owned by Abu Dhabi-based tertiary care provider Burjeel Holdings, and it is staffed by six other board-certified specialists in addition to its director, Dr. Jisoon Park. Dr. Kyu Hwan Jung, Neurosurgery/Spine consultant, Dr. Seung Heon Yang, Orthopedics Surgery/Knee and Hip consultant, Dr. Seongeun Byun, Urology consultant, Dr. Ki Yun Huh, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist, and Dr. Gyungjoon Chae are the specialists.
Dr. Park told Gulf Today on Tuesday that the specialties were chosen based on strong demand and the consistent observation “over the years, that patients from the UAE and the wider region travelled to South Korea for advanced diagnostics, complex surgeries, and structured rehabilitation programmes.” When asked on the necessity for the Korean Pavilion, the Orthopaedics Surgery/Shoulder and Upper Limb expert responded, “There is a clear and growing need.”
Dr. Park stated that abroad travel “involves logistical challenges, higher costs, and limited continuity care,” and that the Korean Pavilion bridges this gap by offering access to the same expertise locally. It also improves the patient experience with a coordinated, patient-centric strategy that delivers care seamlessly, boosting efficiency, comfort, and clinical outcomes.
