Omar Sultan Al Olama, the UAE’s Minister of Artificial Intelligence, spoke with Michal Divon of Khaleej Times about the country’s AI journey and the difficulties in creating a responsible and productive future around this technology. Al Olama considered his position as the first AI minister in history, incorporating AI into many sectors, and striking a balance between innovation and regulation.
Omar Sultan Al Olama, who has always been fascinated by technology, was appointed Minister of Artificial Intelligence in 2017 following the creation of a new ministry devoted to the cutting-edge technology.
He was appointed to the position that paved the way for Dubai’s Smart Government and the UAE’s AI policy in the same month that he got married, marking yet another first for Dubai. One of the nation’s young future leaders, Al Olama, acknowledges that “it is a very tough field to understand” despite his ambition to become a leader in AI.
Al Olama, who is already employed by the government, stated that there was a transitional phase for his new position, which he acknowledges is “a big burden,” but that it also has “huge opportunities.”
He claims that other nations will do the same, with the UAE leading the way in the AI revolution. A committed minister was chosen by Spain in 2020, and others are joining. Although he acknowledges that it has been “lonely,” he accepts it.
