The government of India announced on Wednesday that it will conduct its first official caste census since independence. This decision is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s politics and controversial affirmative action practices.
In India, caste is still a major factor in determining one’s position in society; higher castes enjoy long-standing cultural benefits, while lower castes face prejudice and a strict division between the two. It is believed that over two-thirds of India’s 1.4 billion inhabitants are at the bottom of a millennium-old social structure that separates Hindus according to social status and function.
A cabinet conference led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi authorised the inclusion of specific caste data in the next census, which was initially scheduled for 2021 but has not yet occurred. Government spokesperson Ashwini Vaishnav informed reporters, “The Cabinet Committee of Political Affairs has decided today that caste enumeration should be included in the forthcoming census.
This shows a government’s dedication to the nation’s and society’s ideals and interests. The next census date has not yet been set. The action was described as “historic” by India’s interior minister, Amit Shah.
