It is now time for an independent Palestinian state, stated Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargash, the UAE President’s diplomatic advisor, amid prayers for peace and normalcy in the Gaza Strip. Gargash continued, “Months of death and devastation in Gaza are finally over,” as pictures surfaced showing Gazans embracing, yelling victory slogans, and sharing emotional moments following a ceasefire agreement that concluded a 15-month war. Let’s offer our prayers for peace.
But there was a catch to the truce. Israel said it had not received a list of hostages from Hamas, which caused it to postpone its implementation by over three hours. Israel launched last-minute attacks during the delay, adding to the already high death toll of almost 46,913 persons.
“What was most frustrating was hearing, ‘according to the Gaza health ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians,’ as if war & bombings do,” Gargash said, expressing dissatisfaction with the way world media reported the death toll. Dr Gargash demanded “a clear roadmap for establishing a Palestinian state” last year and said the conflict has “failed miserably” due to the long-standing containment strategy.
Several times, the senior diplomat had reaffirmed the necessity of a two-state solution. He urged the “need to return to Israeli and Palestinian states living side by side” in 2023, just over a month into the conflict.
