Two board exams will be added starting in the 2025–2026 academic year as part of a significant overhaul of the Class X examination system that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) recommended on Tuesday. This action is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and attempts to allow students to raise their test scores to lessen academic pressure.
The Union Minister of Education called a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Education to address the proposal. On Tuesday, a draft policy was created and posted on the CBSE website (https://www.cbse.gov.in). It requests input from students, parents, teachers, and schools until March 9, 2025.
The NEP 2020 suggests holding the Class X and XII board exams twice a year to lessen student anxiety and provide them more chances to get better. It highlights the transition from memorisation to competency-based evaluation, which makes tests more flexible and student-friendly while preserving the top score.
The draft policy states that the first exam phase will take place from February 17 to March 6 and the second phase will take place from May 5 to May 20. About 20 lakh (2 million) Class XII pupils and 26.60 lakh (2.66 million) Class X students are anticipated to sit for the exams in 2026.
